According to German Pig Breeders’ Interest Group (ISN), Pig slaughterings in Germany are predicted to reach a record 52.4 million head in 2007. It is a 4.5% increase on the number slaughtered in 2006.
Due to higher average slaughter weights, net production of pig meat is forecasted to increase by 4.8% to almost 4.9 million tonnes.
According to forecasts by market reporting agency ZMP and the Federal Research Institute (FAL), domestic consumption is likely to increase slightly, boosting exports to a record level of 1.5mt.
In the first half of 2007, German pig slaughterings were 6.3% – 1.6m higher than the previous year, at over 26m head. One reason for this increase was the significant rise in imports of slaughter pigs and weaners from the Netherlands and Denmark.
However, market experts predict that German pig production will not expand further in the following year – as 11% more sows have been slaughtered between January-July 2007 when compared to the same time in 2006.
