The German state of North Rhine Westphalia has stepped up its measures to fight Classical Swine Fever (CSF) as the disease continues to be present in wild boar.
Recently a renewed outbreak was discovered in about 15 wild boar the Euskirchen district, causing the state’s minister for consumer protection Eckhard Uhlenberg to introduce several strict measures:
• a one-off vaccination for wild boar
• extended permission to shoot wild boar
• a reduction of excessive feeding
CSF poses a real threat as disease could spread into commercially held pig herds. This spring a CSF outbreak caused German producers to cull over 120,000 animals, costing about €22 million.
In the neighbouring state of Lower Saxony wildlife rangers have been warned as well.
