In a statement yesterday, Galtee, Ireland’s biggest seller of branded rashers, announced that it has decided to use the Bord Bia (Irish Food Agency) Origin Ireland Logo on its products.

Quality assurance
The Origin Ireland Quality Assurance Logo was launched by Bord Bia in October 2004 with the aim of creating greater transparency as to the origin of Irish pigmeat product.

By the end of the month, the logo should be visible on all standard Galtee rasher packaging.

Origin
Michael Maguire. Chairman of the IFA Pigs Committee, highlighted the importance of placing the Origin Ireland logo on pigmeat products as “consumers have the right to know the origin of their ham…and the Quality Assurance Origin Ireland logo guarantees consumers the highest standards”.

In addition, by not properly identifying the origin of pigmeat “Irish pig production is being damaged, a sector which employs 7,000 people and is worth more then €400m to the Irish economy”.
