EU: subsidy aid for low pig meat prices

19-10-2007 | |

The European Union has decided to take action to help pig producers who are threatened to go out of business due to low prices paid for pigs.

Slaughterhouses can obtain a subsidy to store pork for a while, until prices are higher again.

The pig industry is currently facing very low meat prices. Pig feed, however, is about 35% higher than approximately one year ago.

The European Commission (EC) estimates it will need €40 million to store about 100,000 tonnes of pork for three to five months.
