European Commissioner for Agriculture Mariann Fischer Boel rejected a proposal by Germany on Monday to increase or extend export refunds for pigmeat.
Several EU member states continue to suffer from high feed prices and low pigmeat prices and had sought further relief from the European Commission.
Fischer Boel, will, however, propose tommorrow to the management committee responsible for pigmeat to extend the period for private storage aid by a further three months. The current storage aid scheme was meant to expire in March but will now be valid until June 2008 to avoid flooding European markets with pigmeat as the supply situation slowly improves.
According to a source close to the Commissioner, the proposal for tommorrow is a done deal that requires a simple vote by member states at the committee meeting and will come into effect immediately.
