Edwards accuses pork plant management

US presidential candidate John Edwards criticised Smithfield this week for denying its workers clean water, having them work in unsafe conditions and obstructing their efforts to form a union in the Tar Heel plant in North Carolina.

John Edwards , a Democratic candidate and former North Carolina senator, met with Smithfield Packing workers prior to giving the press conference.

He discussed alleged worker abuses at the plant, the largest in the world, in a closed meeting Thursday morning.

Smithfield spokesman Dennis Pittman said that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cleared the company of recent claims.
