Danish pig numbers seem to stabilise
Statistical research has shown that the pig population in Denmark has showed signs of stabilisation after years of decline, the website from the Danish Meat Association (DMA) reports.
The figures show that the size of the total pig herd is still declining (-7.4% year-on-year), but the sow population decrease (-2.7% year-on-year) was the lowest in the last five years. In 2007, breeding sow numbers decreased by 11.4%.
Growing numbers of piglet exports over the last couple of months have contributed to a shrinking finisher and weaner pig population below 50 kg.
The count was being held at 3,500 farm sites at January 1, 2009.
