Costa Rican pork producers fear competition

16-08-2007 | |

Costa Rica is doubting whether to accept the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) because it might lead to fierce competition from US pork producers.

Giving duty-free access to large companies from the US would put the Costa Ricans out of business, it is feared.

The implementation of the agreement will increase access and lower tariffs for many products from the States in a lot of Middle American countries, according to the US Meat Export Federation.

The agreement will give US pork duty-free access to about 1,100 metric tonnes annually.

Votes
The Costa Ricans will vote on the implementation of CAFTA on October 7th of this year.

El Salvador already ratified the agreement on March 1, last year. This means that Costa Rica must do so by March 1, 2008.
