China to set-up largest pig breeding farm

China’s central Hubei Province will be the future base of the country’s largest pig breeding facility.

The facility will be established under “Project 5113” – an initiative set-up by the Hubei provincial government and China Oil and Food Corporation (COFCO).

COFCO intends to build a pig breeding base with 500,000 pigs with the capability of processing 1 million pigs yearly. The investment amounts to 9.7b yuan (US$1.3b).

International expertise will be drawn in to manage the base. It will be made up of subdivisions for breeding, disease control and pork food research and development.

Annual sales of 10b yuan (US$1.35b) are expected to be generated from the project.
