China decided yesterday that the ban on exports from six US pork processing facilities is to be lifted.
The office of the US Trade Representative made the announcement in a fact sheet containing an outline of the details. The decision came ahead of the US China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade meeting in Beijing this week.
Five of the plants are reported to be owned by Smithfield Foods. CEO, C. Larry Pope, commented recently to investors that a team of Chinese officials had inspected five Smithfield plants to assess whether their export permits could be reinstated.
A resumption of pork sales to China could help the US reduce record pork supplies and ultimately, translate into higher pork prices.
