Canadian company, Merilin International Trading, was fined CAD10,000 (US$9,800) for violating Section 40 of the Health of Animals Regulations.
The company imported 100 cartons (1,600 kg) of pork legs from China which were not declared on the import documents.
The pork legs were found by the Canadian Border Services Agency during a routine inspection in Burnaby, BC and referred the case to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
Prohibited
The importation of pork legs from China is prohibited by legislation as that country is not designated as free from reportable diseases such as FMD.
There was, however, no indication that this shipment was infected with a foreign animal disease.
The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation including the Health of Animals Act and its regulations.
It also protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants and the health of animals in Canada.
