Canada: Hog farmer faces charges in possibly largest animal cruelty case

There have been 23 charges laid against a Manitoba hog farmer. The charges were made by provincial veterinary officials, state reports.

The property of the farmer was raided last June. Reports state that it may be the biggest animal cruelty case ever prosecuted within Manitoba.

Along with the charges of food and water deprivation, it was also found that Mr Grenier kept animals in unacceptable conditions. Each charge has a maximum penalty of a $10,000 fine, six months in jail or both.

In June 18, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers, as well as employees from Manitoba Agriculture were called to Grenier’s farm, where it was discovered with hundreds of dead hogs decomposing in a barn and about 2,000 more alive.

Provincial staff moved the live pigs to another facility for veterinary assessments and care, however, many animals were put down due to bad health.
