Environmentalists, municipal election candidates, animal welfare activists and residents joined the group, founded by business owners, who oppose the US $176-million OlyWest plant, to be based in the city’s St Boniface Industrial Park.
Economy boost
Those in favour of the facility say it could employ more than 1,000 people and help boost Manitoba’s economy.
Opponents, predominantly residents living near the proposed site, say the plant would cause bad smells, contaminate water and put a heavy load on traffic and sewage systems. They want the facility built outside Winnipeg.
Incentive
In May, Winnipeg city council voted to support the plant proposal through a US $3-million incentive package.
In August, the company submitted its application to the provincial Clean Environment Commission (CEC), which is preparing to review OlyWest’s environmental licence application.
