Bayer goes multimedia to give livestock producers better tools

17-11-2010 | |

In a multi-media approach to close the gap between animal producers and veterinarians, German animal health company Bayer Animal Health presented several tools for pig producers to gain a better insight into the health status of their farms.

Bayer, headquartered in Leverkusen, Germany, introduced pig-farm proof checklists for piglets from birth to weaning. Colourful, easy-to-read and printed on strong paper, they can be carried©through pig farms and be used whenever needed.

A similar approach was taken to enlighten dairy farmers about the topic of mastitis.©

For now, both tools are only available in German, but if success is proven, the concept will be launched in other countries as well.

In addition, the company launched a Bayer TV (www.bayerfarm.tv) iPhone application and the BayTool – an online programme to monitor the fight against unwanted visitors on-farm, like rats, mice or flies. For reasons of hygiene, disease spread, animal feed cannibalism and destruction of farm equipment, these should be kept out.

Volkmar Hedwig, product manager farm hygiene at Bayer CropScience, illustrated the necessity of a proper approach: “I sometimes hear producers tell me: ‘I have put some poison or traps here and there, but I don’t remember exactly where.’ Well, this is not the way to do it.”

The company uses Google Earth technology to map farms and to indicate where certain rodents would have been spotted.
