Australian pigs fed illegal swill

19-07-2007 | |

T-bones, bacon and cheese rolls, chicken bones, meat and meat pies have been found in pig swill on five central Queensland properties.

Opposition Primary Industries spokesman Mike Horan has made the allegations and wants to know why the farmers haven’t been prosecuted. He says feeding swill to pigs is one of the most dangerous ways to transmit foot and mouth disease.

Primary Industries Minister Tim Mulherin says it’s not in the government’s interest to tarnish Queensland’s clean and green farming image and all offenders will be prosecuted.

Dr Ron Glanville from Biosecurity Queensland says the state performs well against Australian standards for animal health. He says swill feeding is an offence under the Stock Act .. and any complaints will be investigated.
