Australia Pork Limited criticises Tasmania’s ban on sow stalls

16-06-2010 | |

Tasmania reached the decision to ban sow stalls as from 2017, with the phasing out period starting in 2014.

This has relayed criticism from Australian Pork Limited (APL), with Kathleen Plowman, general manager of policy for APL, stating, “There was at no time any clear understanding of what the process was, that there was any clear question that stalls would actually be banned.”

Plowman added that despite Tasmania’s right to to implement stricter animal welfare laws, better consultation with farmers should have taken place in regard to this decision.
