The first case of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported in Mauritius yesterday. It is expected that all 17,000 pigs on the Island will die or be slaughtered.
The minister of agro industry and fisheries Arvin Boolell commented, “The country is in a crisis situation. Hundreds of pigs have died already at three locations. There is no vaccine and no cure for the African Swine Fever which has reached us.”
Some strains of ASF in Sub-Saharan Africa, which are present in domestic and wild pigs can cause high mortality and disease.
