30 pig farms quarantined for using growth enhancer
Thirty pig farms have been placed under a two week quarantine following the discovery of high levels of the banned growth enhancer, beta agonist, in animals.
To prevent farmers from smuggling pigs out for slaughter at unlicensed abattoirs, Malaysian Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has said that his Ministry would seek the help of the police and the Veterinary Services Department during the quarantine.
The farms in Malacca, Selangor, Perak and Penang must be certified free of beta agonist before they can resume slaughtering pigs. Depending on the number of pigs the farmers rear, the two-week quarantine will cost between RM10,000 (€2,246) and RM100,000 (€22,468).
