2nd Chinese-European Pig Summit at EuroTier 2010

Following the successful premiere of the Chinese-European Pig Summit at EuroTier 2008, DLG will host the second edition of this highly-popular Summit at EuroTier 2010.

A full day of presentations and networking opportunities awaits participants at the Summit, which will be held on 17 November, from 10.30 to 15.30 hours.

The 2nd Chinese-European Pig Summit will bring together international pig experts working in diverse fields. Representatives from breeding companies, feed industry specialists and key personnel in research, finance and marketing are expected to be among the attendees. A high-profile delegation of Chinese pig specialists are also expected to attend this event.©

Pig production – China

Pig production and demand continue to climb in China, the world’s most avid consumer of pork. Rising incomes and strong urban migration trends have driven up the demand for pork, with pig producers across the country reporting favourable revenue performances in the first half of 2010. Despite severe flooding which has affected feed grain supplies and farming activities, major Chinese producers and integrators such as AgFeed and Yurun have all reported healthy demand growth, with the outlook towards expansion.

Challenges in pig industry

But the global pig industry is not without its challenges. Freakish weather all across the world’s main grain regions has been affecting feed grain production, with the result that feed prices are likely to increase, a key impediment to profitable pig production. The outbreak of African swine fever in major pig-producing countries such as Russia is also keeping the global industry on its toes. Regulators and quality assurance programmes are also focusing more than ever on animal welfare in relation to pig© from their management on the farm to the slaughterhouse.

Against these global developments, the Chinese-European Pig Summit will address issues related to market growth, pig health, animal welfare, regulatory concerns and pork self-sufficiency goals in China. On pig welfare issues, its lead speaker will be Dr Andrea Gavinelli of the European Commission’s animal welfare unit.

A networking lunch will be included in the Summit, providing speakers and conference attendees with ample opportunities for networking and discussion.

The Chinese-European Pig Summit is organised by the European Pig Producers (EPP) and DLG, in collaboration with the China Animal Agriculture Association (CAAA). DLG is the organiser of EuroTier, the world’s largest exhibition for animal husbandry. Over 1,800 companies from the animal production sector will be exhibiting at this year’s show, presenting the latest technologies and innovations for pig production.
