Ukraine: Dead wild boar found carrying ASF
Ukraine has confirmed the discovery of another wild boar which has been diagnosed to carry African Swine Fever (ASF).
The dead wild boar was found on January 5, in a river in the Luhansk region, by specialists of the State Border Service. The animal was floating close to the Ukrainian coast, but only 4 m from the boundary line with Russia that runs in the middle of the river. The exact finding location was a forest hunting ground called Pischane, near Stanychno-Luganskyi.
One day later, a laboratory diagnosis and veterinary-sanitary inspection confirmed the animal had been carrying the ASF virus. The disease was reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) on January 8.
The situation is under the constant control of the Main Department of Veterinary Medicine in Luhansk region and the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine.
It is the second time ASF was diagnosed in Ukraine. In July 2012, ASF was diagnosed on a backyard farm in the Zaporozh’ye region.
