Ukraine and Slovakia to join efforts to combat ASF

Representatives of Slovakia and Ukraine recently discussed the possibility of joint measures to fight African Swine Fever (ASF) at the border areas and agreed to work together on measures to stop the spread of the virus.

This was discussed at the meeting of the Slovakian Consul General in the Zakarpatie region, Ukraine with Janko Burianovoy and chief of the Department of the Veterinary Medicine of the Zakarpatie region, Yuri Sadvari.

Ukraine has been combating ASF for a year since the first outbreak of the virus was officially confirmed in the country. During that period the country gained experience in terms of containing the spread of the disease and in localisation of the outbreaks.

This experience will be helpful for Slovakian veterinary services to not let the disease penetrate its territory, stated Ukraine vets.

The two countries agreed on joint measures to monitor the migration of wild boars. In addition, the parties agreed that the biological control at pig farms at the border territories should be increased, so the pig farms are operating in a ‘closed mode’ to exclude any possibility of pigs in contact with wild animals.
