Russia lifts restrictions on pork imports from Belarus
As of 9 January Russian veterinary watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor lifted the restrictions on the import of pork to Russia from six Belarusian enterprises.
The country banned pork imports from Belarus in September 2013 due to the threat of African Swine Fever (ASF). However, the country achieved success in terms of the fight with the disease.
“The measures taken by the Belarusian side for the suppression of ASF were sufficient and at the moment pork products from the country poses no danger,” said press-secretary and assistant manager of Rosselkhoznadzor Alexei Alexeenko.
“So far we allowed the import of pork from six enterprises of the Brest region – in particular Brest meat processing plant, Pinsk meat processing plant, Berezovsky meat processing plants, pig farms JSC Bialowieza, Beldan and Ruzhany -Agro. At the same time we will continue to carefully monitor the quality of the meat imported to Russia from the neighbouring country,” he added.
Russia is one of the largest purchasers of pork from Belarus. In 2012 the volume of supplies amounted to 60,000 tonnes of the total worth US$200 mln.
