Podcast: Vaccines for swine success

The swine sector has been dealing with different bacterial or viral pathogens for many years. With the recent surge of PRRS, coupled with challenges around the Covid-19 virus, now is a good time to discuss vaccines. In this 26th edition of the Real P3 podcast, Dr Casey Bradley speaks to Dr Joel Flores of Cambridge Technologies.

The Real P3 podcast series is an initiative where pork professionals from around the world are interviewed about challenges and solutions in their day-to-day work. Dr Flores is originally from Mexico. He moved to the US in 1991 and has since gained a vast amount of knowledge and experience in the swine sector.

Dr Bradley asks him to explain some of the challenges that the industry is facing in terms of vaccinations, specifically against PRRS, and discusses why some vaccinations are not safeguarding pigs better. Dr Flores offers some valuable advice to producers and discusses the option of custom vaccines and the potential benefits this approach has for swine producers.

Effectiveness of a strong vaccination programme

Dr Flores’ also shares his thoughts on whether a strong vaccination programme will be as effective at controlling disease as therapeutic antibiotics are today, and his recommendation on achieving a successful vaccination programme.
