PEDv vaccine fails to control disease
Hundreds of thousands of doses of a Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) vaccine intended to control the disease failed to do so.
At a meeting which took place in Lethbridge, Alberta Province, Canada, it was revealed that a PEDv vaccine may reduce viral shedding but it will not protect piglets.
This was stated by Dr. Egan Brockhoff from the Prairie Swine Health Services to pig producers. “Vaccine technology has improved a lot in the last 10 years, but this morning, we’re waking up with no effective vaccine against PEDv and we will wake up tomorrow with no effective vaccine,” Brockhoff said.
The vaccine was developed in the US by Harrisvaccines – about 800,000 doses of the vaccine have been distributed to US pig producers, however, the spread of the disease continued despite it being administered.
PEDv causes piglet mortality, however, older pigs can become immune.
