Mild strain of PEDv found in farms West Europe
Various finisher farms in Germany and the Netherlands have reported a mild strain of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea virus (PEDv) since late last year. The type is not as aggressive as the variant in Northern America and Asia.
Dutch agricultural magazine and newspaper Boerderij writes that the mild strain of PEDv usually causes diarrhoea among finishers – the animals are observed to overcome the problems by themselves. There is no report of any mortality, although this might change if the virus would also be found in breeding farms.
In Germany, the virus is found on various farms throughout the country. This week, most likely a second case was discovered in the Netherlands, in the province Gelderland.
The Dutch Animal Health Service (GD) has once more pointed to the need to be very accurate with on-farm health and biosecurity.
In the United States, Canada and several Latin American countries, as well as Asia and possibly Ukraine, a highly pathogenic strain of PEDv has caused mortalities of close to 100% among newborn piglets.
