Antibodies for Aujeszky’s Disease have been found in carcasses of two wild boars in Bavaria state, Southern Germany, shot in December last year.
The disease, also known as pseudorabies, is officially eradicated in conventional swine production in Germany. The country has therefore been awarded the highest status for this disease.
Local authorities fear that the Aujeszky virus may infect the regular industry through organically kept pigs which also can go outdoors. In addition, hunting dogs could be transmitting the virus when coming in contact with infected wild boars.
The antibodies were found in a monitoring programme investigating the blood of wild boars. In Bavaria, over the last couple of months, more wild boars have been found to be carrier of Aujeszky antibodies.
