The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has stated that for the first time Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome was identified in India.
The disease was reported to OIE on 26 June by Gokul Chandra Pati, Secretary of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, New Delhi, India. The outbreak was discovered in Mizoram, north eastern India, here 57 cases and 10 deaths were confirmed by the OIE.
Classical Swine Fever (CSF)
The outbreak was confirmed initially as CSF. However, samples were sent to a laboratory and the presence of PRRS virus was also diagnosed. Test results were supplied by High Security Animal Disease Laboratory, Bhopal ( National laboratory ).
The OIE Animal Health Information Department has stated: Since this is the first time that Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome is identified in the history of the country, the reason for notification as first occurrence applies to the country but the event is in fact circumscribed to a zone.
Measures
Thus far, measures have been carried out to tackle the PRRS outbreak. The measures include:
• Quarantined areas
• Movement control inside the country
• Screening
• Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
• Treatment of affected animals
