ASF Vietnam: OIE confirms 2,000+ new outbreaks

Last week, on the basis of local sources Pig Progress already reported that ASF was beyond control and that the outbreaks had advanced to the south of Vietnam. Not much later, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) indeed received updates pointing in the same direction with 2,121 new outbreaks. It was the first time Vietnam reported new outbreaks to the OIE since March 25.

The reports were combined in clusters, varying from 2 to 331 outbreaks in villages in the same province. The total number of reported outbreaks is now at 2,332; the number of pigs affected and culled according to the OIE count is 1.33 million. According to this count, the virus is now officially in 30 provinces, including 4 in the south.

Outbreak confirmed in Guizhou slaughterhouse

This weekend, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) also confirmed an outbreak in a slaughterhouse near Guiyang City in Guizhou province. In total, the outbreak was discovered in a batch of 75 pigs of which 6 were found infected, according to MARA.

The outbreak has not been confirmed yet by the OIE. Although giving a fair impression of the extent of the spread of the virus in China, it is generally believed that the situation in China is worse than is being reported to the OIE. Estimates vary as to how much of China’s pig herd has disappeared.
