The Chinese market offers huge opportunities for pork, beef and lamb and BPEX and EBLEX have mounted another mission seeking to develop trade.

The delegation attended the World Meat Congress, CIMIE, an exhibition run by the National Meat Association and took part in a trade mission.

BPEX export manager Jean-Pierre Garnier said: “The dynamics of the international meat trade have shifted dramatically over the last two or three years.

“It is now very clear that the Chinese demand for high quality meat is increasing much more rapidly than had been predicted, meaning there are major opportunities for exports.”

“The trade mission included a visit to a pig abattoir and two wholesale markets which will help improve our understanding of processing, so what we sell will meet Chinese needs better.

“The Congress was extremely good and helped us understand trade flows and the demand for pork in China which in turn means we can target the market better.

“We also had meetings with the Embassy and a high-level meeting with the Chinese trade association.”

EBLEX and BPEX are divisions of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.
