UK meat firms visit to Hong Kong a success

A trade mission by British firms to a huge show in Hong Kong proved a great success.

EBLEX and BPEX joined forces with UK Trade and Investment to take 18 red meat firms to HOFEX. They were part of a 41 strong UK contingent – the largest number mission ever to Hong Kong. The 18 firms covered everything from top quality beef and lamb through to sausages, bacon and offal – with beef jerky and pork scratchings thrown in for good measure.

EBLEX and BPEX export manager Jean-Pierre Garnier said: “It was an extremely successful event and the firms which attended all did good business.

“Hong Kong is a wealthy place so there is plenty of scope for us to export top quality beef, lamb and pork.”

Julian Cunningham of Ashfield Foods said: “HOFEX was a success, relationships with existing customers were reinforced and new customer contacts made.”

While Fergus Howie of Wicks Manor said: “I have two lead books full of enquiries and pricing required, ranging from interest in Hong Kong and Japan for our branded bacon and sausages to boxed bones for Vietnam and stomachs to China.

“There was lots of interest in UK pork all based on better traceability and confidence in our offering, this compared to continued food scares in Asian markets.”

And Mark Hayward of Dingley Dell said: “It certainly was a great opportunity to be a part of the stand and we certainly hope to realise something from this.”
