Thailand: Pig producers want to ban US pork imports

The Thai government plans to import pork from the US, this has caused pig producers to speak up and urge the Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, to ban the imports. The producers will meet and discuss the issue with the Prime Minister tomorrow.

According to the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand president, Surachai Sutthitham, 2,000 pig producers will meet the premier in order for the import policies to be reviewed.

As pig producers in Thailand cannot compete with US meat prices which has a lower cost of production.

Drugs

The association president further added that US legislation permits the use of drugs – currently banned in Thailand – such as beta-agonists, including Ractopamine and Carbadox, as feed additives, which produces lean pig meat. The imports of US meat will violate Thai legislation.
