Schothorst Feed Research in Lelystad, in the Netherlands has developed a new sow model. Which allows nutritionists to identify the needs of pregnant and lactating sows. The tool helps assess and optimise sow feeds.
With the new sow model, Schothorst Feed Research can provide customers with more targeted advice. “Our advice was static, but animals are not. Advising customers more specifically was the reason for us to develop this model,” says Jan Fledderus, product manager at the research company.
The model provides insight into the feed needs of sows. Nutritionists already know a lot about this, but with this tool they can increase their knowledge. In addition, the model can be used to explain any changes in the feed composition.”

Differences in husbandry systems, climate, genetics and management, such as weaning age, result in different feed needs for sows. The sow model provides insight into the nutrients that animals need at different stages.
The model works based on the factorial approach. This takes into account, among other things, litter number, condition development of the sow, feed composition and intake, litter size, weaning age, birth and weaning weight of the piglets, ambient temperature and whether or not straw is used. Based on this, the model estimates the sow’s final needs for net energy, SID lysine, available calcium and digestible phosphorus.
“The model makes it possible to calculate different scenarios. A nutritionist can see at a glance how the sow’s needs change if the duration of the suckling period is adjusted,” says Fledderus.
The sow model currently works as an Excel calculation tool. You can already choose from 7 different languages. In the near future, an online tool will also be available via the Schothorst Feed Research website.
