Russia urges Ukraine to restrict pork imports from US

Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) has recently express worries that Ukrainian sausages and meat by-products from pork could be produced from pigs grown in US and other countries, where the feed additive ractopamine is used.

Thus, Russian veterinary experts say that there is existing possibility that products with this additive may enter the Russian market despite the recently implemented tough veterinary rules.

In response Veterinary Service of Ukraine claim that the country supplied to Russia products made only from the Ukrainian pork. To avoid all possible trade conflicts between two countries the Russian veterinary services advises Ukraine to implement the same restrictions on the import of pork with ractopamine as Russia recently did.

“We are trying to synchronize actions with Ukraine for meat produced with ractopamine, as such products may enter the Ukrainian market,” said the head of Rosselkhoznadzor Sergey Dankvert.

Dankvert shared his concerns in a telephone conversation with the head of the Veterinary Service of Ukraine, Ivan Bisyuk.

“We expressed our concerns about the situation and said that if Ukraine will purchase meat produced with ractopamine, it should not be used for the production of finished meat products that are intended to be supplied to the Russian market,” said the head of Rosselkhoznadzor.

Bisyuk said that Ukraine strictly adheres to the all agreements existing between two countries. However, according to Dankvert, Ukraine can introduce similar requirements for the import of meat produced with ractopamine, primarily from USA. This question will be considered very soon and the probability that the same actions will be taken by Ukraine veterinary service is very high, he added.
