In 2014 the production of pork in Russia could reach three million tonnes in live weight – which is 168,600 tonnes more than the previous year, said CEO of the Russian National Union of Pork Producers (NUPP) Yuri Kovalev. He added that these figures are evidence that the pace of development of pig industry is decreasing.

According to NUPP estimations the 2014 growth rate for the industry will probably amounted to 6% versus 10.3% in 2013. In fact, the NUPP expect even less growth in 2015, taking into account the fact that in 2012 the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation suspended support of new investment projects.

“Growth in production mainly is taking place due to the development of already operating pig farms and projects the managers of which still hope that someday they will be subsidized,” said Yuri Kovalev.

In the industrial sector in 2014 NUPP expects a growth rate of 12.5% or 248,000 up 2.2 million tonnes. At the same time, the drop in production on small farms should amount to 9.5%.

As a result, the volume of production in the non-industrial sector will not exceed 750,000 tonnes. The representatives of the NUPP expect that the total share of non-industrial sector will drop this year to only 20% – the lowest rate ever, and continue to decrease at least until 2020.
