In the Nevel district, Pskov region on December 6 the seventh stage of the largest pig-breeding complex construction in north-west Russia was launched. The complex is designed for 2 million pigs.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Agriculture Nikolai Fedorov.”It is surprising that the Pskov region wants to compete in the area of pig farming with Belgorod and Voronezh Regions and the Republic of Tatarstan. It is a very good and ambitious project,” said Fyodorov .
Construction of the first phase of the complex for 480 000 pigs was launched in October 2010. Now the farm contains 199,000 pigs. By 2015, the total stock of commercial pigs will be 1 million with an annual production of 80,000 tonnes of pork. The investor plans to bring the population to 2 million and create more than 3,000 jobs. The cost of the investment project is RUB50 billion (US$1.6bn).
