EU compensating pork producers
The European Commission has announced aid for pork producers who are currently suffering from relatively low pig prices due to the Russian import ban on pork.
The Irish European Commissioner Phil Hogan (agriculture, pictured) said there will be support measures for meat storage, at a meeting with pork producers at an agricultural fair in Paris, France.
The amount of pork in the market needs to be reduced
Hogan said a considerable amount of pork needs to be taken out of the market, stabilising the financial situation of pork producers and stimulating a price reparation.
Russia banned EU pork due to ASF outbreak
The Russian government announced an import ban on pork from countries in the European Union, as a result of the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Lithuania, which is a country in the EU. The EU appealed the measure at the World Trade Organization (WTO). In 2013, the export of pork from the EU to Russia had a value of approximately €1 billion.
Stéphane Le Foll, the French minister of agriculture, applauded the European Commission’s announcement. Hand in hand with various other European agricultural ministers, he had been calling for measures for a long time to alleviate the consequences of the Russian ban.
