China: Eight detained in illegal bacon case

Police in Chongqing have detained eight people for allegedly processsing bacon illegally to sell, according to the Xinhua news agency.

The police raided four sites hidden in a market in the municipality’s Shapingba district where the illegal pork was being processed. Over 10 tonnes of bacon was seized, worth approximately 500,000 yuan (US$80,200).

The sites were operating after the hours of 6pm without a license or health certificate.

According to the police, one suspect admitted they added Sudan Red, a blacklisted additive harmful to human health, to give the bacon a better appearance.
