An ibérico farm in the province of Valladolid, Spain, was the big winner in the 8th edition of the “Porc d’Or Ibérico,” Spain’s annual ceremony celebrating the country’s ibérico production, held on July 5.
Other major awards at the event, held in Córdoba, went to farms in the provinces Cáceres, Badajoz and Salamanca.
The prize Porc d’Or with Diamond – the highest award in all categories – went to “Granja la Mejorada.” This farm is located in Olmedo, province of Valladolid in the autonomous community Castile and León. This farm belongs to the company Agrocesa – Grupo Vall Companys.
The event was attended by 400 industry members as well as Luis Planas, the Spanish minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). It was organised by the Spanish Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA), in cooperation with Ceva Animal Health and the interprofessional association of ibérico pigs (ASICI).
Another major trophy is the MAPA award for Sustainability. This prize went to the farm “Las Abiertas – Hermanos Viceira Puertas,” belonging to the Inga Food company in Madrigalejo, Cáceres province in autonomous community Extremadura.
The One Health award, sponsored by Ceva Animal Health, went to “La Charneca” farm in Usagre, owned by the company Grupo Santana Hernández. This farm is located in Badajoz province, also in the autonomous community Extremadura.
The 4th major prize, the Outdoor Production award, also went to a farm in Badajoz province – this was awarded to the San Rafael farm, belonging to Explotación San Rafael in the town of Aljucén.
Finally, the Iberian Porc d’Or Award for Maximum Productivity went to the “Ibéricos Encinas” farm in Salamanca province, in Castile and León autonomous community. This farm, located in the town Encinas de Abajo, belongs to the company Agrocesa – Grupo Vall Companys. This farm has reached 20.9 piglets weaned per productive Iberian sow per year.
32 awards were handed out in total, to 21 farms in 3 autonomous communities. In addition to the 5 special prizes, a total of 27 gold, silver and bronze statues were awarded, based on the technical criteria born alive, longevity and farrowing rate.
