The topic of sustainability and welfare does not need a lot of introduction. It has become commonplace to include it in production goals, in an attempt to leave the world behind in a better shape.
Now how to translate this into practice? What steps can pig producers and the surrounding industry take to use less energy, to reduce its CO2 footprint and to make sure that animals are kept in the most comfortable way possible?
Both sustainability as well as welfare can perfectly be addressed by providing decent nutrition. That will be the subject of the presentation of Ir Jan Fledderus, who is senior consultant and product manager swine at Schothorst Feed Research (SFR) in the Netherlands. Among other things, he will discuss how to define sustainable pig feed, and what the effect is of diet composition on pig welfare. There will also be attention for CO2 reduction as well as nitrogen efficiency – a hot topic in various countries in north western Europe.
Next on stage will be Dr Jessica Seate, attached to Animal Science Products in the USA as director of veterinary science. She will zoom in on an alternative method to deliver orally active products (like probiotics, prebiotics or live vaccines) to piglets. In this case it is a powdered gel solution, which, after mixing with water can be sprayed on the sows’ udder. She will also touch on the company’s enteric vaccine models.
Sustainable protein solutions will be will be the topic of discussion of Graziano Mantovani, strategic marketing and technology lead swine at Cargill. He will discuss nutritional optimisation, additives, alternative protein sources as well as life cycle assessments – all components that can help making informed decisions how to optimise protein content in pig diets.
Finally, on behalf of Techna, Dr Ian Hands will mount the stage, with a focus on the prevention and control of aggression in pigs. He will discuss the background of the causes of aggression in pigs, and will introduce a botanical-based feed additives, its mode of action as well as trial results.
