The Sustainable Pork Value Chain (in the Netherlands known as KDV) is a concept which has been making very promising steps. The chain is a partnership between many stakeholders within the Dutch pig industry, including 220 pig producers and pork processor Westfort. In addition, it is embraced by wholesalers, butchers, retailers, and caterers.
In this concept, which markets 25,000 pigs per week, everything comes together:
Pig producer Hans Verhoeven was one of the pioneers of this concept since 1997. On his farm in Valkenswaard in North Brabant province, he has been testing and trying new concepts to see what would work in this sustainable chain. For Pig Progress, he is happy to share 4 crucial management decisions that helped him, and the entire Sustainable Pork Value Chain, to make good money whilst farming sustainably.
