Workshop on pig welfare: ‘multi stakeholder approach needed’

A workshop on ‘Pig welfare – castration of piglets’ was held on Wednesday 2 June in Brussels, Belgium.

More than 100 participants attended the meeting, organized by European Commission – DG SANCO. Stakeholders from Ministries/Competent Authorities of the EU Member States, NGOs and Animal Welfare Organizations, Industry, Retails Associations and Universities participated in the works.

The participants discussed the results of research projects and studies, on current trends and consumers’ attitudes and demands, as well as on alternatives to castration.

At the end of the meeting, Mr A. Gavinelli (DG Sanco – Chairman of the Workshop) stated that multistakeholder approach is needed and he called for volunteers to work together in order to create a “ Brussels Declaration” about Pig Welfare – Castration of piglets.

Many stakeholders, among them FVE and UEVP, responded to this proposal and joined the initiative.
