We Care plan announced at World Pork Expo

To encourage favourable public opinion, pork industry leaders unveiled a joint National Pork Board (NPB)-National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) initiative called We Care at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Brownfield has reported.

We Care aims to make sure the pork industry itself is on the same page about best production practices. And it includes the roll-out of the first-ever Ethical Principles for U.S. Pork Producers.

The initial target audience for We Care includes food service operators and major retailers. During a press conference, National Pork Board Vice President of Communications Mike Wegner told reporters meetings with Wal-Mart officials have already taken place and more are scheduled. Then, according to Wegner, the pork industry will take We Care to lawmakers and regulators.

Dallas Hockman is Vice President of Industry Relations for NPPC. He told reporters the pork industry has done a great job of reacting to negative public opinion on issues ranging from sow gestation crates to antibiotic resistance. Now, with We Care, Hockman emphasized the pork industry aims to act first.
