US vets: PCV 2 becomes PCVAD

03-11-2006 | |

For US veterinarians, Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV 2) will now be referred to as PCVAD.

This name, short for Porcine Circovirus Associated Diseases, was approved by the board of directors of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

Definition
With the name change also comes a new definition. The name covers a variety of clinical presentations currently described coincident with PCV2 infections.

The name and definition change reflected the need for a definition in accordance with the variability in clinical signs associated with exposure to this virus.

Dynamic
This case definition is thought to be a dynamic document which will be altered as additional information about a previously unknown disease becomes available.

Porcine Circovirus is responsible for e.g.:
· Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS )
· Porcine Dermatitis and Nephropathy Syndrome (PDNS)
