US: Production of pork and red meat up

Pork and red meat production hit record highs in December last year in the US.

Pork production totalled 1.97 billion pounds (893,000 tonnes), representing a 10% increase from the previous year.

The number of hogs killed totalled 9.69 million head, up 9% from December 2006. The average live weight was up 1 pound (0.0004 tonnes) from the previous year, at 272 pounds (0.123 tonnes).

Commercial red meat production from January to December 2007 was up 2% from 2006 at 48.7 billion pounds (22 million tonnes).
