The weak dollar has led to increased pork imports into Europe from the US.
According to USDA figures, pork exports to Europe increased by 50% in the first half of 2007 compared to the same period a year previously.
This development seems contrary to developments in the EU where supply for pork has outstripped demand.
Pork consumption is around 42.6kg per person and is expected to remain at the same level in 2008.
Europe’s pig supply is growing. In 2007, there was 1.9% more pigs bred than in 2006. Growth was seen mainly in Poland, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.
Elsewhere in the world, US pork exports have gained market share at the cost of their Canadian and European competitors.
