The Conservative prty in the UK have secured a first reading of a Ten Minute Bill to make country of origin labelling compulsory for meat and meat products.
Regional MP Richard Bacon launched the Food Labelling Regulations (Amendment) Bill as part of the Conservative Party’s Honest Food campaign, which was unveiled in the House of Commons last week.
“This Bill has cross-party support and is designed to ensure that consumers can buy British food with confidence,” Bacon told MPs. “The time has come for more honest food labelling to be made compulsory.”
The Bill would make it mandatory for retailers to display the country of origin of their meat and meat products. It would also require meat and meat products labelled as British or carrying the Union flag to be born and bred in Britain.
