Thai pig board soon to be appointed

08-01-2007 | |

The Thai Agriculture Ministry will soon appoint members of the Pig Board to streamline market regulations and controls.

Primarily, the board’s task is to register pig breeders nationwide in cooperation with the breeders associations. Such registration would allow the country to have an exact figure on the kingdom’s output and help it devise efficient development strategies.

Oversupply

A deputy permanent secretary attributed the current decline in pork prices to an oversupply of more than one million tonnes.

The Thai annual production is now about 16 million pigs, while demand is 14.5 million to 15 million head.

Last year, Thailand exported 10,000 tonnes of boiled pork meat, worth over €108 million. Frozen pork is barred from exports due to Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
