Thailand’s agriculture ministry has encouraged farmers in the country to expand maize plantation to reduce imports and to profit from high corn prices.
It is anticipated that land used for maize plantings will increase 48,000 hectares.
It has been reported that the agricultural land reform office recently signed a contract-farming agreement with EM Agriculture encouraging farmers in five provinces – Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu and Uttaradit – to grow maize.
This, according to reports, will directly support animal feed meal as this ingredient counts for 50-60% of the product used for poultry, pig and other livestock feed.
This new maize supply will also alleviate costs for feed-meal producers by stabilising the price of maize.
The office aims to set up 750 enterprises with a total membership of 15,000 farmers.
