Swine medicine weight restriction removed

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved the removal of the weight limit restriction on Denagard Liquid Concentrate, allowing pork producers to now use the product in pigs weighing more than 250 pounds.

Denagard is approved to treat swine pneumonia caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and swine dysentery. Response is usually evident in 24 to 48 hours as tiamulin, the product’s active ingredient, is readily absorbed from the gut and can be found in the blood within 30 minutes after dosing.

“Producers can now use Denagard Liquid Concentrate in animals weighing more than 250 pounds,” says Sean O’Hare, swine and poultry sales manager for the Novartis US farm animal business.
