Survey into salmonella in EU pigs

06-10-2006 | |

The European Union will investigate its member states’ pig sectors for salmonella infection.

The research should show to what extent the pig sectors in the various member states are contaminated – according to the Dutch Product Board for Livestock and Meat (PVE).

As a consequence of the research, guidelines shall be written to fight the bacteria. The research project will last until the end of September 2007.

Slaughterhouses

Tests will be taken in e.g. slaughterhouses – the number of samples, between six and 20, depends on the abattoirs’ slaughtering capacity.

In the Netherlands, the pig sector started with a compulsory research into salmonella infection on fattening pig farms and slaughterhouses in February last year.
